SPN 111 FMI 3 | Engine Coolant Level

Truck Year/Model/Engine: 2016 Freightliner Cascadia Detroit DD15

After turning the truck on one morning, the check engine came on. So I plugged in my scanner tool by OTR Performance. The codes were SPN 91 FMI 8, SPN 2623 FMI 8 & SPN 111 FMI 3. What was wrong with my truck was the CPC4 (Common Powertrain Control Module). After replacing the CPC4, the accelerator pedal started to work properly again and the other codes were cleared also. Check out how I replaced the CPC4 on my YouTube Channel here: https://youtu.be/BAOp3wrIwqw

1. Diagnosing the Problem Using OTR Diagnostics

The issue was identified through diagnostic codes (SPN 91 FMI 8 and others), suggesting a faulty accelerator pedal sensor. Multiple unrelated codes (coolant level, ambient temperature) indicated potential CPC4 issues. – Action: The truck was operated minimally, and diagnostics confirmed the pedal issue.

2. Acquiring the Replacement Part

The driver contacted a dealership and arranged to pick up the pedal part from a nearby shop to avoid a $100 delivery fee. They carefully drove 4 miles in low gear to reach the repair shop.

3. Removing the Faulty Accelerator Pedal

The removal process involved: – Removing covers and bolts using T25 and T40 tools. – Disconnecting the sensor harness and difficult-to-access nuts behind cables under the hood. – Unplugging live wires after killing the battery for safety. – The process required creativity and extra leverage due to tight bolts.

4. Installing the New Pedal

After receiving the new part, the pedal was installed in reverse order of removal. Proper care was taken to ensure the sensor harness and locking mechanisms were secured. The installation was faster than removal, taking approximately 5 minutes.

5. Unexpected Issue After Replacement

After replacing the pedal, the truck exhibited abnormal RPM spikes upon startup, indicating possible further troubleshooting needed.

This video serves as a practical guide for identifying and replacing an accelerator pedal but highlights challenges that may arise during the process.
